Wing-T Football Plays

The Wing-t offense of course brings to mind the University of Delaware, where it was greatly popularized. This offensive set is designed to use team speed and misdirection to take advantage of the defense.

This offense will cause defenders to lose sight of the ball as they try to read the blocking schemes as well as what's happening in the backfield. Because of the many options available to the offensive team with the wing-t, as defenders figure out how to react to one play, they'll be grossly out of position for others.

The wing-t offensive formation is attractive because you can run different types of football plays from the same sets. Out of the wing-t offense, you can get power from the lead or trap play, deception from the counter and speed from the dive play.

You can pass the football effectively out of the wing-t because of the alignments of your split end and tight end. Slant and crossing patterns can be used from the wing-t offense to rack up those needed yards on third down.

Additionally, you can run the option and the quarterback waggle out of the wing-t offense with great results. Another successful play you'll run from the set will be the sweep as your split end can make an effective crack-block to open up the outside.

Wing-T Series

Wing-T Full Back Dive

The Full Back Dive is one of three plays that uses the sweep and misdirection to spread the defense. The first being a speed play. Here the quarter back turns left then reverse pivots to hand-off to his full back who is already racing forward.

Wing-T Tailback Off-Tackle

The TailBack Off-Tackle is a combination play designed for both speed and power. Again the quarterback reverse pivots only this time he fakes the hand-off to the fullback who then moves long the line towards the sideline. The QB continues on behind the fullback handing the ball to the tailback off-tackled.

Wing-T WingBack Counter

The Wingback Counter is a misdirection play. Once again the QB starts with a reverse pivot. The fullback shoots forward and blocks for the tackle who is pulling to the left. The tailback runs off-tackle again. Meanwhile the wingback runs in the opposite direction following the pulling tackle and taking the hand-off from the QB.

Inside Belly Series

Inside Belly Fullback Dive

The Fullback Dive is one of two plays that capitalize on the speed and power of the fullback, while the speed, power and deception of the tailback also come into play. We begin with the QB turning immediately to the fullback and giving him the ball. The QB then continues on as if he still has the ball and fakes to the wingback who has cut across.

Inside Belly Wingback Option

The Wingback Option is a speed, power and deception play. The QB turns immediately to the fullback and fakes the hand-off by putting the ball in his belly. The QB then continues on and hands off to the wingback who had gone into full speed prior to the snap and goes off-tackle.

Outside Belly Series

Outside Belly FB OffTackle

The Fullback Off-Tackle is one of three option plays that combine speed, power and deception. The QB turns at a 45-degree angle places the ball in the belly of the fullback while stepping forward with the fullback. He completes the handoff as the fullback speeds forward. The QB then continues on faking as if he still has the ball and is going to give it to the tailback. The wingback has come across also as if to get the pitch.

Outside Belly QB Option

The Quarterback Option is another option play that is simular to the fullback off-tackle, except that the QB keeps the ball. He continues on looking for the defenses cornerback. If he has been blocked out of the play or is playing for the pitch, the QB speeds on.

Outside Belly WB Pitch

The Wingback Pitch is the third option for the QB. If the first two options are not available the QB pitches to the wingback who is running at full speed. The wingback must be deep as well as wide for this to be effective.

Trap Series

FullBack Trap

The Fullback Trap is one of two running plays that uses power and deception. Here the QB turns and then steps back as if to be dropping back. The fullback powers by the QB's hip and up the middle behind the trap blocking. The QB then bootlegs if he still has the ball.

Counter Trap

The Counter Trap calls for the QB to bootleg to the tailback, rather than the fullback. The tailback follows the lead of the pulling guard and tackle in the opposite direction. In both of these plays the goal is that the wing-t offense takes advantage of the weaknesses of the defensive coverage or alignment.
