Wide Receiver Fundamentals

1) Getting Off the Line

You don't want to let the defender knock you off your route. The idea is to get past the defender and not let him push you parallel along the line of scrimmage.

You need to learn how to burst off the line and use a fake to get behind the cornerback.

One fake to use is the "head bob".

This is where you move your head to one side while you get your body moving straight or to the other side. You can also use a shoulder fake.

The next idea to understand is that a defender will eventually learn your fakes. So you need to mix it up and sometimes even employ double-fakes (fake one way, then the other, then move beyond the defender)...

Offensive Line Skills

The stances and offensive line blocking types you use will be determined by your offensive theory.

If you employ a lot of quick-attack plays, you'll probably teach the four-point stance and scramble blocking. If you pass
often, you may use the two or three-point stances.

The three-point stance is the most commonly used football stance for offensive line blocking.

The feet should be shoulder-width apart with the toes pointing forward. Usually right-handed players will have the right foot staggered back, toes even with the left instep (lefties reversed).

The next aspect of this football technique is to teach your offensive line players to bend at the knees, dropping the right hand as they squat.

The hand should be about a foot and a half ahead of the inside edge of the toes with the outside of the hand just inside the line of the right foot...

Your Coaching Philosophy

Here are five areas you must have a solid football coaching philosophy on:

Offense

Defense

What to teach

Scouting

Organization

1) What is your football coaching philosophy when you have the ball on offense?

Are you a "gun-slinger"? Will your team possess an aggressive passing attack where you try to strike fast and hard and pile the points up?

Or will you have a "ground it out" style? Get a 10 point lead, play the field position game and then sit on the ball and play keep away with the opposition's offense.

2) What's your football coaching philosophy on defense?

Do you try to employ an aggressive style attack where you blitz often and gamble a bit?

Or do you play the "bend, but don't break" style where you're a bit more conservative and just try to limit the opposition to small gains, then force a punt?

For Points 3-5, see full blog entry...

Blocking Fundamentals

Part of the success for your football team is that you pick out the football blocking schemes that work best with your particular athletes. We'll go over how to teach the proper football blocking technique and also which offensive line blocking types work best.

You'll want to teach your offensive line players blocks such as the drive block, scramble block, trap block, double team, down-the-field block, etc. Let's get started:

1) Drive Block

The most basic of all football blocks.

It's important in our opinion to teach this football blocking technique to your offensive line players first but to not base your whole blocking scheme on it.

Unless you have phenomenal athletes on your line, you're going to see your players beat up quite often if they're trying to drive block one-on-one all game long.

We'll get to why that is in a bit. For now, let's focus on the drive block technique so you can teach it...

Look Out for Kiffin to do Surprisingly Well as Raiders Coach

Many people seriously questioned Al Davis' mental capacity when he hired 31-year-old Lane Kiffin earlier this year to coach the Oakland Raiders.

However, we have a sneaky suspicion that Kiffin is going to surprise a lot of people by turning the Raiders around.

He made a great move by convincing Davis to let go of Randy Moss for less than Davis probably wanted. The long-term benefits of ridding the team of the unhappy Moss are already beginning to be realized. Consider the words of Warren Sapp at the team's mini-camp for example...

"Well, I'm sure we don't have Randy Moss around not playing. We don't have someone walking around in street clothes ... like Porter. We're in a much better situation. We have a team. We can go play. At least, we can take that out of the mix.

"I waited 13 years to get the No. 1 pick in the draft and have a No. 1 receiver [Moss] walking around all day not playing and the second best receiver [Porter] on the team not playing.

"Trust me, I went through enough last year with that. Give me somebody who's going to play and let's play."

Reports out of this mini-camp are already positive with the team running under a much quicker tempo with Kiffin at the helm compared to the pace of practice last year with Art Shell.

"Anything different from what we had last year is a welcome change," (Jerry) Porter said. "It's a breath of fresh air."

For Porter, it was great just to break a sweat. He described Kiffin's practices as "fast, fast, fast, fast and fast. Just when you think you think you are slowing down, you go faster."

Let's see if this new enthusiasm translates to a better performance on the field. In might not right away, but we have a feeling that as JaMarcus Russell develops, Lane Kiffin will get the Raiders back to their old winning ways.

How Will Belichick Use Randy Moss?

There's excitement in New England regarding the Randy Moss trade.

People want to know how Bill Belichick will decide to use his new offensive weapon. Will he play outside (as is his normal position) or will he sometimes play in the slot?

For now, Belichick is saying that not much thought has gone into how the Patriots will use Moss. As reported by ESPN.com, he said...

"It's way too early for that right now. Let's [allow] him to get in here and get his feet on the ground first. We haven't worried about that part of it. We want him to get in here and learn our approach and our concepts, the language and all those kinds of things, and we'll see how it goes.

"... He's Randy Moss. He's been a dynamic guy. And he'll make us better and make the wide receivers around him better. As to how, well, we're still figuring that out. I just can't say yet."

However, we think Bill Belichick has definitely thought long and hard about how Moss will help his team. If there's one guy who can get Moss back on track in the NFL, it's the coach of the New England Patriots.

Calvin Johnson Right Choice for Detroit Lions

Some people questioned why Lions President & CEO Matt Millen would pull the trigger on another wide receiver in the first round when Detroit drafted Calvin Johnson in last weekend's NFL Draft.

However, we feel he made the correct choice. Just because Mike Williams and Charles Rogers were flops, how does that have anything to do with Calvin Johnson?

Pretty much every NFL team had Johnson rated as the best over-all player in the draft. How can you pass on the best player, especially when the Detroit Lions needed a wide receiver precisely because Williams and Rogers didn't live up to their billing?

Other teams drafted players they shouldn't have based on need, rather than taking the best player available when it was their turn to select. Those teams will wish they had done what Millen had done when those players don't pan out.

If for some strange reason Calvin Johnson doesn't have the career expected of him, Millen can't be blamed because every other GM would have grabbed the WR if they'd had the chance.

Matt Millen has made some bone-headed decisions in the past. We think he finally got it right.
