Objective of Drill: Defensive tactics for finding your target while shedding 2 individual blocks, focusing on strength, pad level, utilizing hands, keeping good balance, footwork, eyeing target, bringing the ball carrier down quickly, using the correct angles, and it is a true test of endurance and the fight within the players.
Action of Drill: This drill consists of four players-3 offense-1 defense.
The offensive players line up across of each other-about 10-12 yards, and 3 yards apart.
It would look like a triangle type of line up.
The defensive player lines up directly across one of the outside defensive players, about 10-12 yards.
On command, the defensive player will attack straight ahead and make contact with the first offensive player,(BING), who will make an initial contact at about 75%.
Then the defensive player will turn and focus on the second offensive player,(BANG), who, on command, will make an initial contact at about 75% as well.
Then, the defensive player must adjust himself, get set, choose an angle or go helmet to helmet, and make a tackle on the ball carrier (BOOM), at 100%.
Coaching Points: For the safety of the players, you may need to adjust the length of the drill and run it for a short time. Make sure the players are in control when making the initial contact.
If the defensive player falls, use good judgment when commanding the next offensive player into action, to prevent injuries.
Make sure the defensive player is able to withstand the contact and has been thoroughly conditioned prior to using this drill.
For youths, keep the distance between 5-7 yards, and allow time for the defensive player to adjust and focus on the next task before sending the offensive player on the attack.
