Drill is meant to build (tune-up)confidence in players own abilities.
Start season and really young players with running-backs running against linemen.
Then add a blocker.
As they progress go 2 blockers on one defender.
SUPPLIES: (4) tall blocking pads
Place two of the tall pads end to end. Place the other two end to end 2 youth shoulder widths apart. This is "the hole" they will be fighting over.
GOAL: Is for the running back to get past the last pad. Runner must stay between the four pads which simulate a hole in the line.
SETUP: First time through, start with Runner and Defender dead center in the middle of "the hole" on their backs helmet to helmet.
Runner has a ball or one can be tossed to him when he gains his feet.
On the whistle both players get to their feet as quick as they can. Defender tries to stop Runner from making it through his hole.
Defenders will need to get up quickly or get driven into the ground or miss completely.
As they progress: Have a Runner standing behind his blocker ready to catch the ball you toss.
Blocker and Defender are now on their backs helmet to helmet. Runner will have to find a way through the hole.
Emphasize using your blocker by helping him push through the hole and Defender must fight through the block or plug the hole.
My linemen got so big this year I had Blockers double-team the Defender, but made the hole smaller as well.
If successful it will get your timid defenders to hit, your blockers to get up quick and look, and give your backs confidence in their linemen and other blockers.
The little guys have the advantage over the big linemen and usually hit them before they are completely on their feet.
Your backs will love this opportunity to block them.
Be ready for some serious pops. I encouraged my team to applaud hard hits and if they weren't hard enough they had to do it again.

Helps with developing skills to recover a fumble.
Get at least 11 players and line them up shoulder to shoulder.
Next make them turn around.
After this you toss the ball somewhere and don't let them know where so they have to find where it is like a real game .
After you throw it give the signal and then they turn around find the ball and jump on it fighting for it the whole time.
Whoever recovers the ball wins. Repeat as much as you want.
